Event 3 - Hammer Museum

I went to the Hammer Museum on Wilshire for my third and final event. Unfortunately, the day I went many of the exhibitions were being renovated or installed. Due to this, I was only able to really view one of the pieces of art. This piece of work was from Laura Schnitger and was titled "I was here". The piece was installed as a project created specifically for the museum. The project in reference was the UCLA Hammer Museum's Kids' Art Project 2019. The piece was made up of thousands of sequins. Each sequin was double sided, with different shades and shines on either side. Each colour of sequin was squared off together. The project exemplifies hands-on art. The concept was that you are supposed to go up to the piece and run your hands over it, creating patterns or drawing images and words.

A benefit of the exhibitions and installations being closed was that I looked more at how the museum was curated in general. Within that, I noticed so much green. There were plants everywhere, and a diverse selection of plants. This, combined with the white walls and structure of the museum itself, created a large open space. Being so full of greenery, I had to think that this was intentional. This brought me back to our biotech week. Looking at plants and trees can be very inspirational to artists, which made sense for why the museum would be made up this way.
Another cool thing I saw were these chairs. They were curved like spindles and spun around on a tip. I thought that this was an interesting addition to the gallery and reminded me of our course. It is obvious that science and math were involved in making and designing this piece of art.
